Abstract

Purpose:The main purpose of this study was to determine the effect of offering NNS about physiologic response(heart rate and oxygen saturation), crying period and pain behavioral response to premature infant as heel stick.

Methods:The data were collected from May to September, 2003 from 20 premature infants who were born period of more 28 weeks to less than 37 weeks of gestational age and receive heel stick.

Result:The results were as follows. The Pain behavioral responses between the NNS cases and non-NNS case showed statistically significant difference(p=.000). The mean heart rate in both the NNS cases and non-NNS cases showed statistically significant difference(p=.012). The oxygen saturation in both the NNS cases and non-NNS cases don¡¯t show statistically significant difference(p=.977). The Crying period between the NNS cases and non-NNS cases showed statistically significant difference(p=.007).

Conclusion:Through this study result, Giving the NNS can be reducing the pain-reaction, degree of increased heart beat and crying period as heel stick. And we could get a notice that giving NNS is effective way of nursing mediation. The Nonnutritive Sucking should be applied nursing intervention for simple pain management as heel stick.
